Peter Haller

‘Works on paper’ is an expression used to describe or categorize art work. This often indicates the use of paint, pencil or such on paper. In my work, paper itself is the medium. I take into account the surface texture and the structure of the paper. They uphold their characteristics, submit themselves, and are present, but also, sometimes absent.

My principal and ongoing work is called Linescape. The objective of Linescape is to research and to study the ‘line in space’ through contrast, form and rhythm. Several sub-series have been added over the years. All subjects contained within the Linescape series can be found in nature. The compositions are abstract and minimal. Everything is concentrated towards the line as the means of expression.

The configurations of the images formed in my inner vision are gained through experimental exercise with different paper types and through diverse working procedures.
It began with cutting paper strips with a paper shredder. The cut paper shreds were folded, pressed, and onto a larger sheet, attached loosely, leaving space for the play of light and shadow.

In a different sub-series, through a process of relief-cutting, I found that the images tended to evolve from the surface of the paper. I moved the cut-out paper segments against each other, or alternatively overlapped them with adjacent segments, in a collage-like fashion. In doing this, the image revealed lines; the opening up, concealing, moving around and overlaying enabled the coloured, background paper surface to emerge as line.

My current work consists of studies and experiments of the minimalist art.

We usually think of art as representing an aspect of the real world (a landscape, a person, flowers); or reflecting an experience such as an emotion or feeling. With Minimalism, no attempt is made to represent an outside reality; I wanted the viewer to respond only to what is in front of him. The medium (or material) from which it is made, and the form of the work, is the reality.

‘What you see is what you see’, or `less is more`. The intent of my work is to simplify, reduce, enhance, inspire. These attributes are, above all, combined with
that essential spirit of playfulness that moves me into new territories of discovery.
