Howard Goldberg
Still photography, collage, drawing and now AI are central to the way Howard develops narrative ideas and visual treatments. In 2023 Howard exhibited his solo show, THE ROCKING HORSE WINNER. It is one of the first solo exhibits made up entirely of AI imagery.
In the past year Howard has been using photography and AI to explore themes and emotions from early childhood memories.
“I like to think of these images as a mindscape; a place where meaning can be drawn from the shadow of memory. Back in the early 60s, at the age of five, I spent a good deal of time riding a plastic rocking horse while listening to cowboy music. My fantasy world grew to include cowboy boots, hats, pajamas, Mighty Mouse, and a talking horse named Mr. Ed.
Eventually I grew up and started making social issue documentaries. My cowboy history had been long buried in the tumbleweeds of distant memory when I first stumbled upon Generative Artificial Intelligence. Much of what I had seen of AI to that point did not seem artistically interesting to me. There was an avalanche of science fiction steam punk imagery that all looked the same to me. But I had to try it.
My early childhood memories are imbued with sentiment and emotion. It is these feelings that I endeaver to explore, reveal to myself and render through the use of AI and photo compositing techniques”.
